Overview
Duck Pier is a sand-bottom beach and pier break on the Dare County coast. Like most beachbreaks around here, the sandbars are constantly reworked and shift up and down the beach, but the peak next to the Duck Research Pier is the reliable one that comes and goes with the sand. It throws both rights and lefts and still earns a decent reputation, holding onto its better days.
When It Works
The pier draws swell from north-northeast through east to southeast (NNE-E-SE) and is usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Autumn is the prime window, when storm swell is most likely to line things up. Paddling is normally manageable, but when the swell really has push behind it, holding your spot on the peak can get tough.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind from the west-southwest (WSW), with a workable wind window running southwest to west (SW-W). It can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The pier suits intermediate and expert surfers, and it takes just about any craft, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. Expect a fairly quiet lineup with a somewhat reserved feel when it's on.
Access
Parking is the main thing to plan around. In winter you'll rarely have trouble finding a spot, but during summer and on weekends it's a different story, so time your session accordingly.
