Dunes is located about two thirds of the way down Noordhoek Beach. It's a surf spot that draws the crowds, thanks to its potential for producing solid waves. If you’re willing to make the 30-minute walk to get there, you might just find some fun sessions. The vibe can get intense, but it’s just as much about the wave as the crew out there.
This spot really comes to life with moderate SouthWest swells and summer SouthEast winds. It can handle swell sizes starting from around 2 ft (0.6 m) and goes up from there. You’ll find both left and right breaking waves over sand, making it a beach break where you can carve up the face or tub up. The best winds are from the SouthEast, and it works across a range of tide heights—low, mid, and high. Just keep in mind, this one’s for experts; the paddle out can be pretty heavy when the waves are overhead, so be ready for a workout.
While the surf can be powerful and unpredictable, the local scene is more about watching out for bigger fish in the water than stressing about the surfers. Dunes also has a unique feature with an outside bombora nearby where tow crews often take on some serious drops. It's not just the ride that matters here; the whole experience is part of what makes Dunes worth the trek.
