Dungeons is located near Hout Bay and is known for its powerful waves and challenging surf conditions. This spot is not for the faint-hearted, as it is recognized as one of the most intense big wave surf locations in the world. You’ll need some serious skills to tackle it, and access is mainly by boat or jet-ski from Hout Bay. On a good day, it offers some epic surf, but don’t get your hopes too high as conditions can be inconsistent.
The waves here can handle size well, typically ranging from 10 feet (3 meters) and up. The optimal swell direction is from the Southwest, but it can also pick up swells coming from the South and West. You’ll find powerful reef breaks that generally run right. Be aware, though; it can close out at times, so good timing is essential. Light North winds work best, and the conditions are more favorable during low to mid tides. Only experienced surfers should consider paddling out here because of the tricky waves and reef layout.
Dungeons is also known for having a spooky vibe, and it's worth noting that it’s home to the Big Wave Africa competition and is part of the Big Wave World Tour. The outside reef can be pretty sharky, so make sure you know what you’re getting into. This spot is meant for only the bravest surfers looking for a real challenge.
