Overview
El Barco is a powerful A-frame reef tucked into the next bay east, where the wreck it takes its name from helps shape the peak. It breaks over uneven reef and throws both lefts and rights, though the fast, speedy rights are the real draw.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from north through east (N-E), with northeast (NE) swell the best match, and those N-NE pulses are what light up the speedy rights. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and breaks consistently, so it shows up more often than not.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind, though it will also handle a bit of east-southeast wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
El Barco suits intermediate surfers, but it's a powerful wave, so paddle out ready for some punch. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
There's free roadside parking nearby, though getting down to the spot is difficult.
