El Canal surf guide

El Canal is a surf spot designed for experts only, situated in a location that requires a solid north swell to really get going. The waves typically start breaking with headhigh swells, and when the conditions align, you can catch some powerful double overhead lefts, as well as a shorter right that breaks over a rocky bottom. It’s important to note that the waves can blow-out pretty quickly, often before 10 am, so you’ll want to get in early if you can. Getting more north in the swell is usually helpful.

The swell works best at sizes around 5 ft (1.5 meters) or more, and it breaks over an uneven reef. The preferred swell directions for this spot are north and northeast, while the wind coming from the south tends to offer the best conditions. It can hold waves during low, mid, and high tide, but as an expert, you’ll need to be ready for variable conditions.

Getting to El Canal requires a bit of effort; there’s no parking right by the break. Instead, you’ll likely need to park a short walk away, so be prepared for that. If you’re staying at the nearby fancy resort, it’s a lot easier, but otherwise, park and walk will be the way to go. Just keep in mind, it's a surf spot with medium consistency, so conditions can be hit or miss depending on the swell.
