Overview
El Remanso is a sand-bottomed beachbreak tucked into a picturesque cove just south of San Juan del Sur. When the surf inside the town's horseshoe-shaped bay isn't cooperating, surfers drift down here instead. The break peels both left and right and delivers fun, manageable waves that suit beginners and improvers.
When It Works
The cove draws swell from the south through southwest, with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and doesn't hold much beyond that, so it comes into its own on small-to-moderate days rather than when there's serious size in the water. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to time your session to a decent swell window.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to groom the faces. The bank works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a welcoming spot to learn, with easygoing waves well suited to beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
