Embleton Bay surf guide

Embleton Bay is a great little surf spot located in Northumbria, known for its stunning scenery, including the iconic Dunstanburgh Castle. This beachbreak is one of the more reliable spots in the area, making it an appealing choice for surfers looking to catch some waves. Despite its quality, Embleton Bay usually sees smaller crowds, allowing for a more relaxed surf experience.

The waves here can be pretty fun, especially when the conditions align just right. Embleton generally handles swell sizes from 2ft to 6ft (about 0.6m to 1.8m), and it works best with northeast swells. You can find both right and left breaks along the beach, with some decent hollow peaks when the swell picks up, especially at mid to high tide. The bottom is mostly sand, but you might encounter some rocky sections, so keep an eye out for those. The best wind directions are from the south-southwest, southwest, and west-southwest, which help to create cleaner waves for riding. This spot suits beginners to intermediates, and you can use a variety of boards here, like shortboards, fish, funboards, and even longboards, depending on your preference.

Getting to Embleton Bay is fairly easy, with a small parking area at the southern end. There’s a path that leads through the golf course, and there's more parking available at the northern end. The vibe is generally good, but it’s best not to come in large groups to keep the atmosphere friendly. The season for surfing here runs from September to February, particularly when there are bigger, clean swells. Just be cautious of rips during those bigger days.
