Espinho surf guide

Espinho is a well-known surf spot located in northern Portugal. This beach is lively and attracts a mix of surfers from the local area and visitors. While it has great waves, it can also get crowded, especially during the summer months, so be prepared for some competition in the lineup.

The main draw here is the right-hander that breaks off the rocky groyne in front of the casino, often referred to as Casino Right. It stands out for its long, powerful walling ride, especially during a decent Northwest swell. The wave can handle sizes from about 1.2 meters to over 3 meters (4 ft to 10 ft), becoming more challenging as the swell fills in. The best times to surf are during low to mid tide while the ideal wind direction is from the East. This spot is suitable for intermediate surfers looking to test their skills as it can get hollow and requires a solid paddle, especially once the swell is over shoulder height. You can ride shortboards, fish, longboards, or even bodyboards here.

Accessing the beach can be tricky due to limited street parking, but there's a car park near the break by the Tourist Information Office. As you settle in for a session, remember that while the main spot can be competitive, the rest of the beach may offer a more relaxed vibe. If you visit between September and November, you’ll likely find the best conditions for surfing.
