Etang-Salé is a surf spot located on the southwest coast of Réunion Island. Known for its black sand beach, it’s a place that attracts both surfers and windsurfers. The cross-shore southeast wind is favorable for those on windsurf boards, while the surf conditions can vary widely depending on the winds and swells. This spot has a unique vibe, drawing in surfers looking for a challenge and some nice waves.
The surf here works best with a southern swell and can handle swell sizes up to about 3 feet (0.9 meters). You’ll find it breaks over live coral, creating some decent left-handed waves. The preferable wind direction is northeast, and the spot works on low, mid, and high tides. However, it’s worth noting that this beach can get heavy. It’s recommended for expert surfers, as the current can be severe and affects the close-out beach breaks further up the shore.
While Etang-Salé can produce some barrels on calmer days, it's important to be mindful of the powerful conditions. If you catch it right, you'll have a great session, but if not, it can get challenging. So, if you're up for a bit of an adventure, check out what Etang-Salé has to offer and see if the waves are in your favor.
