Fatuuli, also known as Black Rock, is a surf spot located close to town, making it accessible but sometimes crowded. It’s a reef break that offers a mix of fun and challenge for surfers. The area features a unique setup, with right-hand waves that can really deliver if the conditions are right. While it has some great days, be prepared for it not to be totally consistent.
The surf here mainly works best with a good south swell, so you’ll want to pay attention to the forecast for swells coming from the south, southeast, or southwest. When the conditions align, you can find long rights with a barrelling bowl on the inside. The waves can be fast and sectiony, making it a spot for more experienced surfers. It’s advised to hit it on a mid to high tide to manage the sharp coral and enjoy the best of what Fatuuli has to offer. It can handle swell sizes starting at around 3 ft (about 1 meter) and really gets interesting with larger swells.
As for the overall environment, the crowd might be an issue since it’s close to town, but the wave splits and rip make for good alternative take-off spots. Just be cautious navigating the reef after you’ve been riding, as you'll want to avoid getting outpaced by the waves. The preferred wind direction is northwest, so check the wind conditions before heading out to get the most out of your session.
