Fences is a surf spot located along a long stretch of south-facing shoreline featuring both rocks and sandy sections. This spot can link up to create rides that stretch for kilometers, depending on the sand build-up and swell conditions. Accessing Fences typically involves a bit of a trek from Waiinu Beach, so be prepared for a short walk. It's important to remember that this place is best suited for advanced riders.
The waves at Fences can break over uneven reef and sand, offering both point breaks and rides that generally go to the right. The optimal swell direction is southwest, but it can also pick up swells coming from the south and west. Fences handles swell sizes starting from a manageable 0.6 meters (2 feet) and can provide some solid waves when the conditions are right. The best times to surf are during mid to high tides, especially with a northeast wind blowing. Just keep in mind that the quality of the surf can be inconsistent, so it really depends on the day.
When you head to Fences, make sure to shut the farm gates if you're driving down the track. If you can't drive, it's a simple walk from Waiinu Beach. Given the expert level needed here, it’s definitely not a beginner-friendly location, so make sure you’re geared up and ready to handle what Fences has to throw at you.
