Flame Balls is a surf spot located off the northern tip of Nosy Ve, an island that's part of a marine and land sanctuary in Madagascar. It can be reached in about 30 minutes by motorized dug-out from Anakao. This spot is known for more than just its great waves; it was featured in the surf film Chocolate Barrels, which adds a bit of a claim to fame. However, don't expect an easy ride here—it’s not a beginner-friendly place.
The waves at Flame Balls deliver long, spitting lefts that can really get going when conditions align. For the best experience, you'll want a south-west swell that's around 0.9 meters to 1 meter (3 ft) high. The waves break over live coral, providing a challenging environment. It's most suitable for skilled surfers, as the wave can be quite fickle and tends to favor mid to high tides. On good days, you can find some impressive barrelling sections connected by fast carve walls, but make sure the wind is blowing southeast to avoid choppy conditions. Otherwise, this spot can be grumpy and less enjoyable.
While it may be tempting to hit the waves whenever, keep in mind that the safest and most enjoyable sessions usually occur in the afternoon when the tide is right and the wind is favorable. The surrounding area, with its protected coral reefs, also highlights the importance of being mindful of the local marine environment while you enjoy surfing at Flame Balls.
