Fletcher's surf guide

Surf: General: The town of Stuart is actually on the west side of the Intra Coastal Waterway, but the surf is in Jensen Beach and north along Hutchinson Island. Fletcher's is 400 yards north of its more famous neighbor, Stuart Rocks, and boasts a coral outcropping. Fletcher's tends to close out on the biggest swells, but when a solid, 4- to 6-foot north-northeast swell is running, rights and lefts will peel like a point all the way inside before closing out on the long inside reef. While Stuart Rocks is more consistent and has better form, Fletcher's is a good option when the Rocks is packed.

Fletcher's can get busy on the weekends during good swells, but the local vibe is fairly mellow. Everyone surfing there is conscious of the fact that they're not surfing the Rocks, and the peak is not as tight, either.

Getting to the beach from the south requires a long ride east from I-95 through a rather convoluted system of roads, but just follow the "Beaches" signs to A1A, which heads south through Indian River Plantation. Turn south at the stoplight; Fletcher's and Stuart Rocks are two miles down the road. A1A can be reached from the north via the South Causeway in Fort Pierce. Tides: Low and the first hours of the flood Size: Waist-1' overhead Wind: WNW Swell: NE Bottom: Reef and sand Paddling: Easy on the average day but paddling can be a challenging on bigger swells. Spot Rating: Average spots overall but like other South FL spots, can get good on NE swells. Access: Free parking, but be sure to lock up. Crowds: Crowd Factor: Light to moderate. Local Vibe: Inconsequential. Environment: Clean ocean water. Hazards: Watch break-ins, car thefts and shallow inside reef. Season: Fall-Spring, Hurricane
