Flies is a surf spot located from East Hampton through Southampton down to Shinnecock Inlet. It features a beachbreak setup that can be a bit hit or miss, depending on the conditions. The eastern jetty is known to produce longer rights when there’s a Southwest swell, while a Southeast swell can offer some decent hollow wedges. The other side of the inlet may only get good waves during bigger swells, so don’t expect consistent action all the time.
The spot handles swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and is particularly good with a SouthWest swell direction. You’ll want to look for waves breaking over sand, mostly going right, which is great for beginners to practice on. For the best results, aim to surf during low or mid tide, especially when the wind is coming from the Northwest. You can catch a few decent sessions here, but it might not be the best choice for seasoned surfers looking for top-notch waves.
Parking can be a hassle, especially during the summer months since the area is surrounded by exclusive suburbs. Make sure to check for town tags required for parking, or you might end up walking a bit to get to the beach. It’s best to plan ahead during the busy season!
