Flys surf guide

Flys is a surf spot located near South Hampton, known for being pretty tricky to find, especially for those who aren't familiar with the area. The beach is surrounded by estates that block easy access, making it feel a bit like Fort Knox for surfers. If you manage to locate it and navigate the parking situation—don't forget, you’ll probably need a permit—you'll have the chance to enjoy some decent waves. Just be mindful of the locals, as they can be a bit particular about their surf spots.

The surf at Flys can be hit or miss. It can handle swells from 3 feet (about 1 meter) to a solid 10 feet (around 3 meters), with the best conditions usually coming from the southeast and east directions. When the swell's right, you can expect fun left and right beach breaks over sand. The preferred wind directions are from the north or northwest, which helps shape those waves nicely. The mid tide is generally the sweet spot for riding, and the spot is suitable for intermediate to expert surfers. When the conditions align, you might score a really good session, but be ready for some fickle moments.

Accessing Flys can be tricky, but if you can pull it off, you’ll find a mellow crowd, though it can get a bit heavier at times. The overall environment is pretty clean, making it a nice place to hang out between sessions. This spot really shines in the autumn and winter months, so plan your trips from September through March for the best chance at good surfing. Whether you ride a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or bodyboard, there’s something here for everyone willing to take on the challenge.
