Fortunes Rock Beach is a punchy beachbreak that peels both left and right over sand. The waves are short and hollow with thick, pounding lips that break close to shore, so it rewards surfers ready to handle a fast, powerful wall and punishes anyone caught out of position.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northeast through southeast, with northeast (NE) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so you want a solid pulse of energy to get it going.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. On a high tide the waves suck up and crash right on the shore, so pick your moment.
Local Tips
Watch for scattered rocks sitting in the lineup. Fortunes Rock tends to draw a crowd, many of them making the trip from Portland, so expect a busy lineup when it turns on.
Access
Parking is the main headache: it's free in winter, but summer brings hassly permit-restricted parking, and the lot mixes free, paid, and restricted options depending on the season. Facilities are sparse, rarely more than the odd port-a-potty, though a lifeguard is on the beach.
