Overview
Fox Hill is quite possibly the best wave in New England when itโs on. Itโs a long right-hand point over rock and reef, located directly across the bay from Rye on the Rocks, and is the longest right point in the Granite State.
There are three take-off spots, and with enough skill they can be connected. The wave mixes hollow sections with room to turn. At high tide it changes character, becoming a fun peak off the top of the point, with a small take-off area and a limited window.
When It Works
Fox Hill likes swell from east to southeast and is usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. The main season is autumn and winter, especially from September through March.
On overhead swells at high tide, there can also be a left that pitches onto the ledge and is much more challenging.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is west. A workable wind window runs from west-southwest to northwest.
Low and mid tide work, and a rising tide is better. High tide can still be worth it, but it turns into a different, shorter-window wave.
Local Tips
This is better suited to intermediate and expert surfers. Shortboards and guns fit the main wave.
It gets very busy, and the atmosphere can feel intense. Watch for rocks, currents, lobster pots, and freezing winter water. Paddling is pretty mellow in summer but much harder in winter with full cold-water gear.
Access
Parking fills quickly, so arrive early. If you miss a legal spot, you may be left with illegal parking and a ticket.
