Overview
Garden City Pier is an average, crumbly pier break that peels both left and right over a sand bottom. It's a designated surfing area with good public access, so the lineup tends to stay busy whenever there's a wave to be had.
When It Works
The pier draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), but it comes alive best on a S/SE swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's a decent working window once the swell lines up. Expect soft, crumbly pier waves rather than anything hollow or fast.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest offshore wind to groom the faces. It works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The one setup to avoid is a high outgoing tide, which doesn't produce here.
Local Tips
Easy access and plenty of parking make this a consistently crowded spot, so plan on sharing the peak when it's working. Water quality is worth watching too, since stormwater and residential drainage can push pollution into the water, especially after rain.
Access
Parking is easy, ranging from a car park with free parking to paid, metered, and roadside options, plus off-season beach parking. On land you'll find restrooms, showers, and a surf shop nearby.
