Graveyards is a surf spot located about a kilometer south of the more popular breaks in Kaikoura. This spot offers a shorter right-hand point break that's less crowded, making it a decent alternative when the main beaches get busy. While it doesn't always deliver the most spectacular waves, it can provide some fun sessions, especially when conditions align.
The spot works best with a southeast swell direction and can handle swell sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters). While the wave has a fast take-off, it tends to back off into a wider, fatter wall as you ride it. You'll find that the surf breaks over boulders, which adds a bit of a natural feel to the ride. The best wind direction to look for is from the west, and it works well during low to mid tides. It's important to note that this spot is more suitable for intermediate surfers, given its nature and break style.
To get to Graveyards, drive north on State Highway 1 from Kaikoura for about 10 minutes until you cross the Hapuku River. Once past Hapuku Lodge, take a right onto Kiwa Road before the tight left-hand corner. It's a gravel road, so keep an eye on the local conditions. After crossing the railway line, you'll find the surf in front of the graveyard, where the right-handers start breaking. Remember to check the surf before paddling out!
