Green Island is a unique surf spot that requires some effort to access. It’s a long walk and even longer paddle to the southwest tip of the island, especially over the Shark Pit. However, for those willing to make the trek, the spot can be quite rewarding when the right swell hits. The scenery is nice, and it’s worth noting that it’s a popular spot, often crowded, especially during the summer months.
The waves at Green Island mainly break left, and they are known to offer long, sectiony rides. The spot works best with moderate to big swells coming from the northeast to south, and it can handle swell sizes around 3 feet (0.9 meters). The waves peel slowly over an uneven reef, making it particularly suitable for intermediate surfers. If you prefer your surf sessions in good conditions, keep an eye out for northeast winds; this spot can provide some nice opportunities even in summer. It’s good to go at low, mid, or high tide, but you might find the best rides during those favorable wind conditions.
While waiting for your turn to catch a wave, just remember to bring along some mosquito repellent for those pesky bugs around the area. You can also take advantage of the spots overlooking the island, like the cabins that offer a nice view. Just be prepared for the crowds, especially when the swells are good!
