Guajataca is a surf spot located on the beautiful northwest coast of Puerto Rico. It's a super-wide, packed sand beach that's semi-protected, making it an interesting option for surfers looking for something different in the area. The beach can be flat at times, but it’s still a reliable place to catch some waves when conditions are right. With plenty of space to spread out, it's a friendly spot for surfers of various levels.
The surf here can be hit or miss, but it generally handles swell sizes from around 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters). You can expect waves coming from the North Northwest, North, and North Northeast, along with the East directions. The beach features left and right breaks, making it versatile for different skills. It’s best to surf during low to mid tides, as the waves tend to perform better then. However, the waves can close out more often than you’d hope, especially when they are big, but on good days, it can produce decent rides, particularly a rare left that breaks in front of the tunnel when the swell is from the NW.
Paddling can vary depending on the size of the surf, so be ready for some effort if the waves are big. Most surfers from beginner to expert can find something to enjoy here, whether you’re on a shortboard, funboard, longboard, or even a fish. The crowd is typically pretty spread out, and the local vibe is not too bad. Access is straightforward, as you can park right on-site. Late summer and fall are the prime times for tropical cyclone swells, but consistency tends to come in late fall through early spring.
