Haggerty's is a surf spot located in the Palos Verdes area. Known for its unique setup, it offers a range of waves that many surfers enjoy. The access point is down some cliffs at Malaga Cove School, so be prepared for a bit of a hike. This spot can definitely get crowded, with a mix of rowdy locals and experienced surfers.
The waves here are mainly lefts, and Haggerty's works well with swells coming from the West, West-Southwest, and West-Northwest. It handles swell sizes from around 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 15 feet (4.6 meters) and tends to be better on bigger days. You’ll want to be careful of the shallow rocks at the take-off zone, especially when it’s smaller, as the lineup can get pretty packed. On larger swells, Upper Haggerty's really shines, delivering longer and faster barrels, but it requires at least a 6-foot (1.8 meters) swell to clear the rocks.
Optimal wind directions for Haggerty's are from the East, Southeast, and South-Southeast. The waves break over rock and kelp, making it essential for surfers to be cautious. The best tides are generally low to mid or mid to high, providing ideal conditions for that rippable left point wave. This spot is suited for intermediate to expert surfers and is best from autumn through spring. Be ready for a lot of paddling, as the wave only really works when there’s solid size.
