More about Haggertys surfspot
Named after the old Haggerty estate, classic and thick wintertime lefts off the rocky headland officially called Malaga Cove. Site of some of California’s earliest surfing days. Three separate take-off zones here: Furthest inside is Lower Hags, a slower left working best on W swell. Haggertys, the main peak at the base of the church parking lot, starts breaking at 4ft (1.2m). Lots of shallow rocks near the take-off; expect blatant drop-ins. Best with NW swell. South of the church, Upper Hags has very long walls. Starts working at 6ft (2m); a mistake here will mean a trip over the reef. Best on big W swell. Paddle up from Haggertys. Always plenty of takers at these high-consistency spots.
Access is via a trail in the 500 block of Paseo del Mar at Via Chino, leading to the southern end of Malaga Cove.
