Harlyn is a north-facing surf spot that really comes alive when the winter swells hit. You'll need solid southwesterly winds for it to work well, but when the conditions align, you'll find friendly, rolling waves that attract longboarders and beginners. The waves can get pretty fat and backwashy at high tide, but generally, mid-tide is the sweet spot since the banks aren't very defined. Expect it to get crowded, especially when it's one of the few places firing during storm swells.
The surf here can handle swell sizes from 3 to 8 feet (about 1 to 2.5 meters), with the best swell direction coming from the west. You'll find both left and right beach breaks over a sandy bottom, making it a versatile spot for different board types, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and even bellyboards. Paddling out can be tricky at times because of the current and rips, so it's good to stay aware of the water movement. Overall, the waves can be punchy and powerful, especially during the winter season from December to February.
Access is pretty straightforward with beachfront parking available, but keep in mind that this spot can get super busy, especially with local surf schools making appearances. The vibe is generally chill, but crowded. It’s a decent choice for a quick session when other spots are blown out. Just be prepared for some competition in the lineup!
