Hendaye Plage surf guide

Hendaye Plage is located on the border with Spain and is a long, sheltered beach that can serve as a reliable surf spot, especially when the rest of the coast is closing out. The beachbreak offers a variety of peaks, with some sections working better near the casino or the south jetty. It’s a popular destination for beginners, which explains the high number of surf schools in the area. On good days, surfers can enjoy decent waves, making it a nice spot for a fun surf session.

The wave conditions are pretty mellow here, generally ranging from knee to head high (about 0.6m to 1.8m), making it suitable for surfers of all abilities, particularly beginners. You’ll see both left and right waves breaking over sandbanks, with some rocks at the eastern edge helping to shape the rights. The optimal swell direction is Northwest, and it handles swell sizes from 2 feet to 6 feet (0.6m to 1.8m). The best times to surf are during low to mid tide or high tide, especially when there are medium to big Northwest swells with a south wind. For boards, funboards, longboards, and SUPs work well here.

The spot can get crowded due to its popularity, especially during surf school sessions and big storms when it tends to be one of the few working spots around. The vibe is generally pretty mellow, but be prepared for plenty of other surfers in the water. If you’re looking to escape the busyness, it’s best to go during off-peak times. The conditions are most consistent during the winter months from October to March, making it a winter haven for locals and travelers alike.
