Overview
Hendaye Plage is a long, sheltered beachbreak on the border with Spain, often the fallback when the rest of the coast is closing out. The waves are mellow and average overall, but that is exactly why it works so well for beginners and why there are so many surf schools.
The most reliable areas are usually near the Sokoburu jetty at the western end and around Le Casino in the middle of the bay. At the eastern end, Les Deux Jumeaux can occasionally produce a more solid right when enough swell gets in. Further out, Vanthrax only breaks a handful of times a year with massive left barrels and is for pros and very experienced bodyboarders only.
When It Works
Hendaye Plage is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is at its most useful during bigger swells, especially from October to March. The best swell direction is northwest, with workable swell from west to north.
It is moderately consistent, with lefts and rights breaking over sand, plus some rock influence around the eastern edge. The surf is generally knee to head high, never especially big or heavy inside the bay.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind is south.
It works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide being better.
Local Tips
This is a strong beginner option, especially on a funboard, longboard, or SUP. Crowds are part of the deal: surf schools are common, and when big storms make other spots too heavy, Hendaye can get packed.
Watch for crowds and bailed beginner boards. The local atmosphere is generally mellow, though it can feel a bit reserved.
Access
There is roadside parking and a car park along the seafront, but parking is paid and can get very busy in summer or when the surf is on.
Facilities include restrooms, showers, lifeguards, and surf schools. Water quality is generally good, but it can get iffy after heavy rain.
