Hermosa City Beach/Hermosa Municipal Pier surf guide

Hermosa City Beach, located near the Hermosa Municipal Pier, is a popular surf destination in the South Bay area. This beach offers a casual vibe, making it a great spot for both locals and visitors. The area is easily accessible, lying west of The Strand pedestrian walkway and stretching down to Pier Avenue. With its wide sandy beach, it's a classic Californian surf spot that invites surfers of all skill levels.

The surf here can be pretty average, usually providing beach break waves that can handle swells up to around head high (about 2.4 meters). The optimal swell direction is from the west, but you can also catch some decent waves coming from the south and northwest. Suited for mid to high tide, the waves tend to break over sand and can come in both left and right directions. It's best to surf early in the morning when the winds are easier, and the swells are smaller and peaky. However, during larger swells, expect a lot of close-outs, which can make for some exciting barrel rides but can be frustrating if you're looking for clean waves. It can get crowded out there, so be prepared to share the waves.

This spot is located in the heart of the surf culture in South Bay, making it a great place to soak in the atmosphere, even if the waves don't always impress. The beach is a well-loved hangout, so you might find some friends and fellow surfers chilling around, especially after a session in the water.
