Horseshoe Bay is a surf spot that's known for its right-hand break. This place needs a decent swell to really get going, but when it's on, you can score rides up to about 200 yards (183 meters). It's generally more consistent during the winter and spring months, making those times the best for a visit. However, keep in mind that it can be a bit fickle overall, so it's not the most reliable spot in the area.
The surf here can handle swell sizes from around 2 feet (0.6 meters) up to about 7 feet (2.1 meters) and breaks over both sand and rock. The wave types are primarily beach breaks, and it tends to break to the right and left. The best conditions for paddling occur with a WNW to WSW wind, and the preferred tide heights range from low to mid, which can make for some enjoyable sessions. Though it's suitable for various skill levels—beginner to expert—it’s ideal for those riding fish, funboards, or longboards, particularly on those bigger days when the swell picks up.
Accessing Horseshoe Bay can be a bit tricky, with limited parking options nearby. Fortunately, the crowd factor is usually mellow, so you won’t have to fight for waves. The local vibe rounds out the experience nicely, making it a laid-back spot to enjoy some surfing. On the down side, be aware of the chilly water temperatures that can lead to hypothermia, especially in the cooler months.
