Horseshoe surf guide

Horseshoe, also known as Hawaiian Jack, is a surf spot located in close proximity to General Luna. The spot features a 300m paddle out to the break, which can be a bit of a trek for those not familiar with the area. The surf here is generally best at high tide when conditions are favorable, especially during headhigh swells. With a fringing reef stretching for about 2km towards General Luna, you might find different peaks and corners popping up along the ride.

The waves at Horseshoe have a unique setup. They typically break over live coral, forming both left and right waves. The spot handles swell sizes ranging from around 3ft (1 meter) and is most optimal when the swell comes from the NorthEast. Wind coming from the West is preferred to keep the waves clean. While it can be a bit tricky to assess the size without going through the low tide reef, many surfers make the 20-minute walk from the cemetery or opt for a quick 5-minute boat ride from town. This spot is generally more forgiving than others but can be blown out easily if conditions aren't just right. It is recommended for expert surfers who can navigate the area confidently.

General Luna itself rarely offers rideable waves, but it serves as a good reference point for swell size at Horseshoe and other nearby spots. Keep in mind that the surf at Horseshoe can vary, and it's important to check conditions before heading out. Also, the area can see less crowding compared to more popular spots, which gives you some room to work with.
