Where the Houhora Harbour empties into the sea can see some chunky waves on the rivermouth sandbars when a big NE-E swell sweeps in.
Houhora Heads is located at the mouth to the Houhora Harbour on the east coast of Northland. From Kaitaia, head north on North Road, State Highway 1. Before you get to Pukenui, turn right onto Houhora Heads Road and follow this down to the end, to the river mouth. From here its a paddle across the river mouth to Stanley Point.
