Huntington Beach Pier Northside surf guide

Huntington Beach Pier Northside is located just north of the famous Huntington Beach Pier. This spot is known for its surfability throughout the year and attracts a mixed crowd, from beginners to seasoned surfers. The Northside is often a little less crowded than the Southside, which can be a relief when you're looking to catch a few waves. It has free parking available on the side streets, and there are meters and beach-front pay lots if you need them. The vibe here can be a bit heavy near the pier, but spread out along the beach, it calms down.

The Pier Bowl at Huntington Beach Northside is where you'll find the best waves, especially on solid south swells. The right breaks into the pier are often short and wedgy, and can even barrel on occasion. If you're riding left, be prepared for a mix of closeouts and some open sections. The spot handles swells from various directions including South, South-Southwest, and West, with sizes ranging from about shoulder-high (1.2 meters) to 8 feet (2.4 meters). It’s a pretty forgiving spot for different skill levels, making it suitable for beginners, intermediates, and experts alike. However, on strong south or northwest swells, the current can get pretty intense, so be ready for a workout when paddling out.

When it comes to wind, the north-northwest and northeast directions are preferred, as they provide better conditions. Tides play a role too, with low to mid tides being the sweet spot here. Throughout the year, you can expect decent surf conditions, but fall tends to bring in some epic waves. While the Northside can be fun, the Pier Bowl usually offers the most consistent action, providing an enjoyable day on the water for those ready to tackle it.
