Huntington Beach Pier Southside surf guide

Huntington Beach Pier Southside is a well-known surf spot located in the heart of Surf City, California. This area is famous for its surf culture and hosts many competitions throughout the year. While summer draws in a lot of surfers looking to catch some waves, locals often argue that the Southside really shines in the winter months. Offering a mix of beach and pier breaks, the Southside can be quite busy, especially at the pier, but there’s usually a bit more space as you move down the beach.

The wave quality at the Southside can be a bit hit or miss. When conditions align right, you can find shoulder-high to overhead (about 1.2 to 2.4 meters) waves, making it a good spot for all skill levels, from beginners to experts. The best swells usually come from the South, South-Southwest, and even the West, with ideal heights ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 meters (4 to 8 feet). You'll find a mix of rights and lefts breaking over a sandy bottom, especially with the right swell direction. However, keep in mind the winds can destroy the waves from 10 AM to 1 PM, so your chances of scoring a decent ride drop significantly during those hours.

Paddling out can be pretty average most days, but be ready for some tough currents when a strong south or northwest swell rolls in. Crowds are a common sight, especially around the pier, giving it somewhat of a zoo vibe, while other areas can feel less packed. For those familiar with the local scene, it’s important to be mindful of the locals, especially at the pier. Also, after it rains, the surf environment can deter many surfers due to water quality concerns. Free parking is available on nearby streets, so access isn't too bad.
