Hyatt Reef surf guide

Hyatt Reef is located in front of a tourist-friendly hotel strip, where you’ll find a mix of calm lagoon waters and more adventurous surf spots. This place is popular with surfers who don’t mind making a bit of a trip, as the best waves are found by taking a boat out to the barrier reef. The break here can be a mixed bag, attracting surfers looking for some decent rides.

The surf here is mainly a reef setup with right-hand waves that break over live coral. It works best with swells coming from the south or southwest, handling sizes around 3 to 8 feet (approximately 1 to 2.5 meters). At low, mid, and high tides, you can find some action, but the waves can get hollow, especially on bigger days. It tends to be more favorable with a northwest wind. Just be aware, the spot is best suited for expert surfers, as the currents can be strong, and you’ll be paddling a lot.

There are two sections to Hyatt Reef, with a noticeable gap in the reef that separates them. The outside wave can be a bit unruly with awkward, rip-torn peaks, while further inside, the waves become more guaranteed tubes as they suck over the shallower reef. It's an exciting spot, but keep in mind it can get pretty nasty when the swell picks up.
