Ile a Vache surf guide

Ile a Vache is a small island located off the southwestern coast of Haiti. It's accessible by a passenger ferryboat from Les Cayes, making it a great getaway for surfers looking for a less crowded experience. The island features a landscape dotted with small hotels, and you'll find plenty of wildlife like nightjars and owls hanging out in the trees. The vibe here is laid-back, perfect for those who want to enjoy both the surf and the natural beauty around.

The surf at Ile a Vache is decent, mostly offering good left-breaking waves that come in over boulders of limestone and some shallow sections of coral. The spot is best with a southeast swell and can handle swell sizes starting from 1ft (0.3m). It works really well at low to mid-tide levels, and you’ll definitely want to hit it when the swell period is around 7 seconds. For wind, northeast directions are ideal. It's more suited for intermediate surfers because of the reef break, so keep that in mind if you’re heading out.

If you're planning your visit, remember that this spot is tide and size sensitive. It's also a great area for various activities beyond surfing, with beautiful natural sights to take in. Cows can be seen grazing under mango trees, and the area is filled with birdlife, making your surf trip here feel more connected to nature. Just make sure to check the conditions beforehand so you can enjoy your time on the water effectively.
