Imperial Beach is a laid-back surf spot located just west of Ocean Lane, between Carnation and Encanto Avenues. It's a beachbreak that serves up fun waves for surfers of all skill levels. Given its location in Southern California, you can expect decent conditions most of the year, but the winter months typically bring in more consistent surf. The vibe here is generally chill, making it a great place to hang out and catch some waves.
The surf at Imperial Beach is best when the swell is coming from the west, but it can also handle swells from the south and northwest. You'll find that it’s manageable with swell sizes starting at around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters), and the waves break over sand, which can be nicer on your board. When you're out there, you'll notice both lefts and rights rolling in, especially during mid to high tide. Just a heads up, getting out can be tricky when the swell picks up, so be prepared for a bit of a paddle.
While you’re out surfing, the conditions are typically best with an east wind, so keep that in mind when you check the forecast. It's a pleasant spot to enjoy some time in the water, whether you’re riding some mellow waves or waiting for a bigger set to roll through.
