More about Island Beach State Park surfspot

Favors rights on a SE swell. Gets hollow on lower tides, and there is an endless selection of peaks all the way down to the jetty at the southern end. 4WD or Herculean hike required.

Early arrival necessary in summer, before they close the gate to protect this pristine but sensitive area. It is possible to camp for up to 3 nights on the beach, if you have a 4WD pass and an intention to fish. Pluses include consistent and rarely crowded waves, no tags and no dress code. Minuses are currents, jellyfish, and entrance fee.
