It’s a good idea to get acclimatised by staying a few days in nearby Tulear or Anakao, before driving the 10-12h to Itampolo Left. These reliable, lined-up lefts in front of the village, wrap around a coral reef that is offshore in the prevailing SE’er. It’s a 1km long paddle, so it’s safer and more practical to use a local fishing boat. There are other reefs on the north side of the bay but the peaks are usually disorganized compared to the left.
