Jacksonville Beach Pier surf guide

Jacksonville Beach Pier, often just called Jax Pier, is located in Jacksonville Beach, a few blocks north of Beach Blvd. This spot is well-known as one of the area's high-tide breaks. It features various peaks along the pier which help spread the surfers out, making it a bit easier to catch waves. However, be ready for some competition in the water as it’s one of North Florida's more crowded and aggressive lineups.

Jax Pier works well with swells coming from the North to Southeast and can handle wave sizes from about 0.6 meters (2 ft) to 3.6 meters (12 ft). The waves break over sandy bottoms, producing both lefts and rights, suited for a range of abilities from beginners to experts. The best times to surf here are during incoming to high tides, especially around mid to high tide. When the wind is coming from the South to West, you'll often find the waves lining up nicely. Whether you’re riding a shortboard, funboard, longboard, or fish, there’s a cookie for everyone, as long as you’re ready to paddle for a spot when it’s busy.

Getting to Jax Pier is pretty easy since there’s a parking lot nearby. However, once you’re in the water and it’s packed, snagging a wave may feel like a battle. The local vibe can be a bit tricky, fluctuating between chill and a little more competitive, so just be mindful of your surroundings. While the water looks murky, this is mostly due to natural tannins from the nearby St. Johns River. Surfing here is best from fall through spring, particularly during hurricane swells, so keep an eye on the forecast.
