Jardim do Mar surf guide

Jardim do Mar is a well-known surf spot located on the south shore of Madeira. This place has a rich surf history and was once labeled the best big-wave pointbreak in the world. It's a beautiful coastal village that offers surfers a chance to ride some challenging waves. However, it's essential to know that conditions can change, and this place is not for beginners.

The break mainly works best with a Northwest swell coming in, along with additional swells from the West and North. Jardim do Mar has the capability to handle swell sizes up to about 6 feet (approximately 1.8 meters). The waves come in as primarily right-hand point breaks, which can lead to long, fast, and powerful rides. The ideal time to hit the water is during low tide when the waves tend to be more favorable. Be prepared, as the spot is suited for experts only, with the waves breaking over boulders, making it vital to have experience and skill.

Getting into the water can be tricky, especially on bigger days, and the seawall built in 2003 has changed how the waves break, pushing them closer to shore. It's generally a good idea to paddle out from the backside of the point, which is to the west of the village. Keep an eye on the wind, as north winds are preferable for the best conditions.
