Kahutara surf guide

Kahutara is a surf spot located just south of Kaikoura. This place is known for its more intense vibe compared to its neighbor, Mangamaunu. It has a heavy feel and tends to be less consistent, which means you're not guaranteed a decent wave every time you head out. The surf breaks over a mix of gravel and boulders right in front of the Kahutara River mouth. It's not for beginners, so make sure you're comfortable in the water before tackling this spot.

The wave at Kahutara usually kicks off with a sucky and hollow section, followed by a thick walling phase that can really ramp up as it approaches the shorepound. You’ll want to hit it during lower to mid tides for the best ride. The ideal swell direction is from the southeast, but it can also pick up swells coming from the northeast and south. The wave typically handles about 3ft (around 0.9 meters) comfortably, breaking mainly over boulders. The wave breaks to the right, so keep that in mind when positioning yourself. If the wind is coming from the northwest, you'll likely have a better surfing experience. This spot is well-suited for intermediate surfers looking for a bit of a challenge.

Getting to Kahutara is pretty straightforward. From State Highway 1, you can park on either side of the bridge. The surf break is just a short walk down from the campground. If you’re looking to explore, just south of Kahutara is K Reef, which is another good wave, especially on an easterly swell. Overall, there are plenty of surf spots in the area, with over twenty options available if the conditions are right, so you won’t be short on choices.
