Kalk Bay Reef is located along the coast road heading to False Bay. It's a known spot for surfers, especially those looking for something a bit more challenging. This area features a mix of reefs and beach breaks, with Kalk Bay Reef being one of the more notorious options. Be prepared for a lively scene, as it can get quite crowded, especially on good days.
This reef is best when there's a Southeast swell, but it can also handle swells coming from the Southwest. The waves can start breaking at around 2ft (0.6m) and can deliver some solid lefts and rights, making it versatile for experienced surfers. The wave breaks over a rock ledge, and you'll want to catch it on a low, mid, or high tide. Ideally, you'll be looking for a Northwest wind to complement the conditions here. Just a heads up, this spot is really suited for expert surfers, so make sure you're up to the task before paddling out.
Be mindful that the environment can be sucky and shallow, which can make things a bit tricky. If you’re looking for alternatives, there’s a similar ledge at Dangers or a right-hand wave at Bailey's Cottage that might be less crowded and just as enjoyable.
