Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island are exclusive residential and resort beaches located south of Charleston, South Carolina. These spots are mostly frequented by tourists, and while they offer some good surfing days, they aren't as consistent as other local beaches. Sandy Point on the north end of Kiawah can catch some nice surf, especially when there are strong south swells. The south end of the island, particularly Seabrook, can occasionally be affected by sandbars, river outflows, and other factors that can block waves from reaching the beach.
The surf here can handle swell sizes from about 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) and works best with swells from the South, SouthEast, and EastSouthEast directions. You can find both right and left beach breaks, which make it ideal for surfers of all levels, whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or expert. The best times to surf are during mid to high tide with favorable winds coming from the North, NorthWest, or NorthNorthWest. Expect some scattered peaks around here, and when the conditions align, you might enjoy some long lefts at Sandy Point if the sand is right and there's a solid S/SE swell running.
Access to the beaches is mostly via private developments, but if you head to Beachwalker County Park, you can easily get to Kiawah's beach. Just keep in mind that crowds are generally light, so you’ll have some space to yourself. The local vibe is mainly tourist-oriented, with not much of a dedicated surf community. Paddling can be straightforward most days, though be cautious of strong currents during hard NE and SW winds.
