Kina Road is a surf spot located along the Surf Highway, a bit south of New Plymouth. It’s accessible by turning onto Kina Road before you reach Opunake. The spot features beachbreak peaks that can attract some wind, and while it might not be the most famous place, it offers some decent waves if you're in the area.
You’ll find that Kina Road works best with southwest swells, but it can also handle swells coming from the north. The breaks here are mostly over uneven reef and sand, offering both lefts and rights. The waves can work well with sizes around 2 ft (0.6 m) and can handle bigger, but it’s not always consistent. The best times to surf are during low to mid tide, and the preferable wind direction is from the northeast. This spot is generally suited for intermediate surfers who are comfortable with the conditions.
For a little extra, if the swell is on the smaller side, you might want to check out the sucky rights at the end of Arawhata Road, which can be fun on those small days with the right conditions. Just remember that the winds can also attract wind rigs, so it can get a bit busy out there.
