More about Kohala Lighthouse surfspot

Kohala Lighthouse is a good example of a secluded, localised hot spot. The main peak holds a grunty left that peels across the inside of the bay and is somewhat sheltered from NE trades by the cliffs. The right off the peak can barrel hard, but rocky exposed outcrops start popping up, shortening the ride. On big swells a right will break out at the lighthouse and sections will break right down the headland, plus a big peak starts showing further out. The other side of the headland also has a lefthander, but it is spooky water around Kohala, with a reputation for tiger sharks.

Advanced surfers only and try the less crowded rights if the lefts are oversubscribed. Park carefully, remove valuables and walk in, keeping a low profile. Several spots work nearby like Halelua where according to legend, centuries ago, chief Nu'uanupa'ahu was lured to his sharky death, by Chief Kalaniopu'u. The leeward Kohala Coast is fairly poor surf wise thanks to cliffs and a lack of set-ups.
