Kumera Patch surf guide

Kumera Patch is located just south of Okato and is known for its left boulder pointbreak. It shares some similarities with Raglan in the way it breaks, offering a bit of a unique setup for surfers coming through the area. The spot works best with swell from the southwest, northwest, and can handle sizes up to around 2 feet (0.6 meters). The wind is generally preferable from the southeast to get the best conditions.

The waves here can deliver some long rides that might even hollow out in certain spots, depending on the sand buildup at the bottom. It’s a reliable choice for intermediate surfers looking to sharpen their skills. The wave typically breaks over boulders and sand, which can add some texture to the ride. It's advisable to hit it on low, mid, or high tide for the best experience.

Getting there requires a bit of a trek. From New Plymouth, you’ll head southwest on Devon Street West, before continuing out of town on South Road State Highway 45. After passing through Okato, take a right onto Kaihihi Road and park at the end. It's about a 20-minute walk southwest along the beach to reach the point, so be prepared for a bit of a mission. The spot offers good consistency but can often be onshore, so keep an eye on the weather!
