La Couarde surf guide

La Couarde is a surf spot located on the island of Île de Ré. It's known for its beach setup and is popular among local surfers. The spot can get pretty crowded, especially on weekends and during the summer months, but it offers a laid-back vibe overall. The wave quality can vary, and it’s not always consistent, but it’s worth checking out when the conditions align.

The surf at La Couarde is often described as pretty average, but it can come alive with the right west swell. When the conditions are good, you'll find two rideable peaks on either side of a wooden jetty located in front of the Pergola parking lot. The optimal swell direction is from the west, but it can also handle swells from the southwest and northwest. The waves can break over sand and typically work well with swell sizes starting around 1 foot (0.3 meters). You can catch both left and right waves here. The best time to surf is during mid to high tide, particularly with a north wind, making it more manageable for intermediate surfers.

As you move further down the beach towards Le Bois, you’ll encounter more reefy peaks. Additionally, there’s a good peak at Le Gouyot near Gros Jonc, which is close to a big campsite. This makes it a great spot for surfers looking to enjoy a beachside camping experience while catching some waves.
