La Cupula is located about one mile outside of Antofagasta, the copper mining capital of Chile. It's a nice spot for surfers looking for a left-hander that breaks over a combination of sand and rocks. This wave is relatively consistent, offering a decent session even when the conditions aren't perfect. When it’s on, it has the potential for some nice, hollow barrels, providing plenty of room for creative surfing. It works best with swells coming from the SouthWest and WestSouthWest, and can comfortably handle wave sizes from about 2 meters (6 feet) to 3 meters (9 feet).
The entry is pretty straightforward; just paddle straight out from the small parking lot. You might need to duck dive a bit, especially when the swell is pumping, but it’s manageable for most. The wave starts breaking at around 1 meter (3 feet) and can get really fun up to around 3 meters (10 feet). Most surfers here are experts or intermediates, and the wave can produce both right and left breaks, though it's mostly known for the left. Wind from the NorthEast to SouthSouthEast is preferred for better conditions.
Typically, the crowd factor is low, with only about five to ten locals in the water. The vibe is relaxed and friendly, so you won’t feel out of place. The season to catch La Cupula at its best is during the winter months, between May and August. Overall, it’s a decent spot to check out if you’re in the area, especially with the quality bodyboarding wave nearby keeping the crowds manageable.
