La Lancha surf guide

La Lancha is a popular surf spot located in the Punta Mita area, known for its mellow waves and welcoming vibe. This spot attracts both locals and traveling surfers looking for fun rides. It’s easily accessed by asking around or taking a hike down the beach. The surrounding environment is pretty clean, making it a nice place to hang out when you're not in the water.

The surf at La Lancha is mostly right-handed, breaking over rock and coral, which gives it a unique feel. It handles swells from 1.2 meters to 3.7 meters (4ft to 12ft) and works best with swells coming from the NW, as well as some fun days with big SW swells from the tropics. The ideal wind directions are from the north and north-east, and the tides are best around mid to high levels. It’s a proper little pointbreak that can be enjoyed by surfers of varying skill levels—beginner to expert—though it does get busy when the waves are good.

Be aware that when it’s pumping, the paddling can get a bit challenging, but generally, it’s manageable. The crowd factor can be quite high, particularly on those good days, and there are quite a few longboarders out there as well. So, if you find the scene too crowded, be ready to share the waves. Just keep an eye out for shallow rocks while surfing.
