La Nord is one of the main peaks in Hossegor and is considered one of the best beachbreaks in Europe. Located just north of Capbreton, it usually holds some rideable waves, especially when the swell hits around 3 meters (10 ft) on the Biscay buoy. The spot can get pretty busy with surfers and onlookers alike, particularly when the big swells roll in. The vibe is relaxed but expect to see a lot of experienced surfers in the water.
This beachbreak is fast, heavy, and hollow, particularly when the swell is coming from the Northwest and reaches around 8 to 15 ft (2.5 to 4.5 meters). You can catch both lefts and rights, with the right-hander being favored due to the rip current that helps you paddle back out. The best conditions usually come at low to mid tide and with wind from the East or ESE. Paddling can be quite the workout; you'll face currents and sometimes closeouts, so being intermediate is really a good idea for this spot. If you’re looking for barrels, there are some heavy sets to be found, so consider a shortboard or a gun for those bigger days.
Accessing La Nord is straightforward—just walk down the beach from wherever you grabbed breakfast. The environment is decent, but with a crowded lineup, you'll definitely want to watch your surroundings and pick your waves wisely. The spot is popular year-round, especially during autumn and winter months when the swells kick in.
