La Paloma is a surf spot located about a 20- to 25-minute drive from the town center. You’ll find it along a scenic area known as Los Acantilados, which translates to “the cliffs.” These cliffs offer a dramatic view while you’re out on the water. To reach the surf, you’ll need to park at the top of the cliff and navigate a steep, rocky path down to the water, so be careful on your way down.
This wave typically breaks to the right, making it suited for expert surfers. It has a rock and sand bottom and produces powerful tubes, particularly in its first hollow section. The best time to catch a good wave is during a rising low tide with a solid southeast swell and a light northeast wind. You can expect wave sizes from around 2ft to 6ft (about 0.6m to 1.8m), with the potential for some impressive double-overhead tubes on bigger days. This spot handles swells from various directions, including southeast and northeast.
The crowd factor at La Paloma is pretty low, with plenty of waves available for everyone. The local vibe is generally relaxed, so it’s a great place to chill out and enjoy a good surf session. The area stays clean, and the main hazard you should be aware of is turning your back to the ocean. This spot is best during the seasons of April to May and November to December, and a shortboard is the go-to choice here.
