La Pointe surf guide

La Pointe is a surf spot located near Cap Ferret, known for its unique surfing conditions inside the Bassin d’Arcachon. It often catches very large swells, particularly when the conditions align. The backdrop features the impressive Dune du Pyla, giving surfers a nice view while they ride. While it can offer some fun waves, the currents here can get pretty intense, so it’s usually more crowded with bodyboarders.

This spot works best with swells coming from the west, though you can also find decent waves from the south-west and north-west. It handles swell sizes starting from 1ft (about 0.3 meters) and features beach breaks over sand. Surfers can expect both left and right waves. The best time to hit it is during mid to high tide, and the preferred wind direction is from the west. It's generally suited for intermediate surfers, so if you're still learning, this might be a challenge.

Keep in mind that while La Pointe can produce some fun rides, there are also stronger currents to contend with, especially when the ocean side is more active. It's a good idea to stay aware of submerged jetties, channel markers, and debris from oyster beds, as these can create hazards. Overall, it's a spot with its quirks that can definitely be hit or miss depending on the day and conditions.
